This publication explores the rapid rise of megacities as a defining feature of global urbanization, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges created by unprecedented population growth, including infrastructure strain, environmental concerns, and social inequity. Based on papers from the CTBUH 2016 Conference in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong—key examples of large-scale urban transformation in China’s Pearl River Delta—it examines how cities are merging into vast, interconnected urban regions. The two-volume work addresses both the broader social, economic, and urban implications of dense vertical urbanism, as well as the technical innovations in design, engineering, and construction that are shaping the future of these complex and rapidly evolving megacities.
