Cities are experiencing unprecedented growth, and the horizontal suburban development model is increasingly seen as unsustainable; with limited land remaining, building upward has become a logical solution, but any strategy for greater height and density must still meet the fundamental human need for access to greenery. This guide offers recommendations for selecting, implementing, and maintaining green walls in high-rise buildings, emphasizing the influence of local climate and the risks associated with different wall types. Its guidance draws on 18 case studies and research by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, presenting richly illustrated examples from 11 cities across 9 climate zones, featuring green walls reaching up to 69 stories and representing the global state of the art in vertical greenery design.
