At its core, the annual CTBUH Awards program is a platform upon which to take a step back and examine the the world’s latest tall buildings and urban developments, with the added goal of acknowledging the individuals and project teams who made them possible. With more than 130 submissions vying for recognition in the 2016 program, the pool of potential winners was stacked both with the cloud-piercing towers that have made headlines throughout their entire development timelines, and those that have only recently emerged from obscurity on the global stage.

In recognizing the industry’s greatest achievements each year, it’s the Council’s hope that the concepts described materialize into more than just a small percentage of projects, but become commonplace considerations for the vertical city. Of course, there are numerous barriers to consider in this pursuit: global strife, economic upheaval, outdated legal systems, weather-related disasters, population growth, mass urban migration, and more. But within these barriers are hidden opportunities and underlying solutions that will become the foundation for new periods of innovation in the industry.

Just as the decisions of the individual define the person, so does the architecture we build define our collective perception of the world. So this book presents to you an optimistic vision for the future, as conveyed through the discernible efforts expended to realize the projects recognized in the 2016 CTBUH Awards program.
